Nail fungus is an infection that occurs under the nails of the fingers or the toes. It does occur more often on the nails of the toes, but it can occur on your fingernails. It is an unattractive condition and sometimes painful condition that affects nearly ten million people in the United States alone. If you are one of those who do suffer from a nail fungus infection it is important that you try to find out the direct cause of your infection.
If you suffer from nail fungus, you know how embarrassing it can be, particularly if your hands or feet are constantly where others can see them. If your nails are out there for everyone to see, a nail fungus infection is most definitely the last thing that you want to have happen. It is unsightly and you do not want to spread it to anyone else. Prompt treatment is important regardless, but if it is causing embarrassment to you, it can be something you seriously think about.
Generally you have nails that are strong and can protect your fingers and toes from being injured; however, your nails can be stricken by infection just like any other part of your body. Fungus becomes trapped underneath your nail and finds itself in a breeding ground so that it can grow and thrive. This type of infection spreads between nails and can even be transferred from one person to another. This can happen for those who shower in public stalls, use a locker room shower, or even swimming pools. The fungus thrives in environments which are damp and dark. Those who have a history of athletes foot, diabetes, or wear shoes that are tight or enclosed are at a much greater risk of getting a nail fungus infection that others. You are also at a greater risk if you go to nail salons for manicures and pedicures. Do some research on the salon you frequent and make sure they are clean and use tools that are sterilized or even new for each individual person. Avoid nail polishes that are dark in color as they do not allow any light to get on the nail thus making it a dark place that is more apt to grow the fungus.
When you become older, your chances of getting a nail fungus increase because your nails become thicker and break easier. Nail fungus causes the nails to become weaker; they break easier, become discolored and can break open and cause other, more serious infections. In a lot of cases there can be a lot of pain associated with this condition. As soon as you realize you have a nail fungus infection you should begin treatment as soon as possible.
There are always medications and remedies you can try such as those purchased over the counter. However, if you purchase any type of medication over the counter or take any type of prescription medication, you should always be aware of any negative side effects that can occur when taking any type of drugs.
