Nail fungus, sometimes called Onychomycosis, will occur when small fungus organisms get trapped under the finger or toenail.  Many people suffer from nail fungus either on their finger or toenails and a lot of the time it can affect both.  Because it isn’t easy to detect a nail fungus infection it is generally full blown before you even know it is there.  The fungus moves to other nails and infects them quickly because fungus can survive easily under the nail since it is place where not much air can get to the nail and it is a warm, dark climate.  If you have some type of sore or cut on your toe or finger, it can make it easier for you to contract a nail fungus.  It is easier for the bacteria to penetrate the skin causing you to become infected.

Nail fungus is contagious and can be spread between people when sharing a locker room, bathroom or shower stalls.  Most of the time these are places that people generally walk around in barefoot and chances are if they have a nail fungus, it will be spread to others.  If you have to walk around in places such as these, it would be a good idea to get some type of shower shoes or sandals to wear into the shower or to walk around in when you are in a locker room.  Those who have a nail fungus on their fingernails can spread the fungus when they share an emery board or a nail file.  If you play sports or get pedicures or manicures in salons, you are also at a greater risk of getting some type of nail fungus infection.  If you think you might have been infected by a nail fungus, finger or toenail, you can begin treating it so that it doesn’t become worse or spread to your other nails.

When you have a nail fungus your nails will become yellow in color, become chipped and break easily.  The nail will also begin to become flakier and collect dirt underneath them.  You might also experience your nails becoming thicker and painful.  If you do find that you have any of these symptoms you should begin treatment immediately.  If a nail fungus goes untreated for very long it can lead to a worse infection.

There are several treatment options that are available to you but it is important to choose a treatment that gets to the heart of the problem and will help to heal the fungus from the inside out.  Your treatment option will need to be strong enough to kill the fungus internally while allowing a user relief from the pain, discomfort and discoloration that is noticeable on the outside.

Make sure you are careful when you have to be exposed to damp, moist environments or if you enjoy those pedicures and manicures that your local salon gives, take the necessary precautions that will keep you from being exposed and from suffering from nail fungus.
